CDF Webinar Symposium:  COVID Education Week

To assist employers, corporate counsel, and HR professionals that are still grappling with the myriad of COVID-related employment issues, CDF has designed a series of complimentary webinars that will run daily from December 7 through 11 from 9-10 am (PST)* that will address the most pressing issues and provide answers to the most frequently asked questions.

Emerging Litigation Areas in 2021 Stemming from COVID-19 Pandemic

In addition to navigating California’s new four-tier system for re-opening, trying to stay current on CDC, OSHA and California Department of Public Health Guidelines, and deciphering the new federal and state-specific laws, California employers have been forced to make a myriad of logistical and other decisions (often with little time to plan) that will impact how, and perhaps if, they weather the COVID-19 storm.  Most of these decisions also bring with them varying levels of risk from employment claims; and while the typical California employer is no stranger to lawsuits, the unique issues associated with remaining operational during a pandemic present liability concerns as novel as the new coronavirus itself.

During this webinar, CDF attorneys will examine the recent surge in COVID-related employment litigation in California, and focus on best practices to avoid a costly, legal infection.

COVID-19 Related Time Off Work/Leave of Absence

The COVID pandemic has caused employees to call off work for numerous reasons, including their own illness, illness of a family member, exposure to an individual with COVID, concern about their risk of exposure in the workplace, and/or issues related to school closures affecting their children.  The federal government, as well as the state of California (and some municipalities), have responded by enacting new laws that provide for paid time off and protected leaves of absence.  These overlapping laws are in addition to existing paid sick leave laws and leave of absence laws that already apply to many employers.  Understanding and applying this matrix of laws to various COVID-related absences can be tricky. 

During this webinar, CDF attorneys will explain the applicable leave laws and apply them to various hypothetical, factual scenarios to help employers navigate these important and ongoing issues.

COVID-19 in the Workplace – Testing Positive & Returning to Work

As the COVID pandemic continues and despite employers’ precautions and safety measures to stop the spread of COVID from their workplaces, increasing numbers of employers are learning that members of their workforce have contracted the virus.  After a COVID+ test, who does an employer notify?  What can employers tell co-workers without infringing on privacy rights?  Can an employer require a negative test to return to work?  This webinar will help employers prepare for the likelihood that one of their teams will test positive and steps that should be taken thereafter. 

CDF attorneys will share (1) best practices and new legal disclosure obligations after employees test positive for COVID and (2) best practices for returning employees who did test positive to the workplace to avoid traps for the unwary.

Navigating CARES Act Relief for Employers: PPP Forgiveness and the Employee Retention Credit

Many employers are not getting the full benefits out of the CARES Act.  Experienced consultants from Armanino LLP will first discuss eligibility for the CARES Act Employee Retention Credit of up to $5,000 per employee and provide helpful advice on the mechanics for applying for the credit.  The second part of this program will provide information on how to calculate and maximize your PPP loan forgiveness, certain tax aspects of the PPP loan, and other important PPP developments.
