SACRAMENTO, Calif., August 29, 2019 – Award-winning California labor and employment defense firm Carothers DiSante & Freudenberger LLP (CDF) proudly congratulates its Sacramento Office Managing Partner Mark S. Spring for recently receiving distinct honors in recognition of his labor practice in Northern California. Spring was recently named one of the 2020 Best Lawyers in America® (for Employment Law - Management and Litigation - Labor and Employment, Sacramento, CA), selected to the 2019 Northern California Super Lawyers® list, listed as a Top Lawyer by Sacramento Magazine, named a Best of the Bar honoree by the Sacramento Business Journal, and achieved a Martindale-Hubbell AV® Preeminent™ Peer Review Rating.
Born in the Bronx, Spring settled in Sacramento in 1991 where he started his legal practice, married his wife, Sheila, and raised three children. In fact, Spring was the founding partner of CDF’s Sacramento office – which opened its doors in 1997. He has 25+ years of experience handling labor and employment law matters throughout Northern California and is the Chair of CDF’s Traditional Labor Law Practice, where he focuses on management representation in union-management relations and employment-related litigation.
Spring’s reputation for litigation excellence is built upon an impressive record of successfully battling and negotiating against a variety of unions, including Teamsters, UFCW, IBEW, Laborers, SEIU and Stationary Engineers. He has represented Fortune 100 and Fortune 50 companies in the trucking/warehousing, transportation, entertainment, and broadband communications and defense contracting industries. He also has worked with tribal nations based in California and Alaska on their union issues. Spring’s practice also includes the representation of public figures, elected officials, executives, and athletes in sexual harassment lawsuits and other high-profile employment-related matters.
“I’m honored and privileged to be recognized for my traditional labor practice, but the accolades are really a testament to all the other lawyers and support staff that work with me at CDF that help us achieve such great results for our clients. I am so proud to be associated with this firm,” said Spring. “As the firm celebrates 25 years of service this year, so do I.”
Spring has been an active member of the American Employment Law Council (AELC) since 2008. AELC is an international invitation-only group of some of the top senior management-side employment attorneys across the world. Spring also serves as the Northern California representative for the Wage & Hour Defense Institute (WHDI), a national group of rigidly selected employer-side wage and hour litigators from across the country.
Spring is a steadfast advocate for diversity in the legal profession. He has been a member of Sacramento County Bar Association’s Diversity Hiring and Retention Committee since 2003 and has welcomed diverse law students each summer to his office to give them an opportunity of an internship. He also previously served on the Board of Directors for the Sacramento No Glass Ceiling Task Force. CDF was recently recognized as one of the “Best Law Firms for Female and Minority Attorneys” in Law360’s 2019 Glass Ceiling Report for firms with 20-149 attorneys, which could not have been achieved without all of his contributions over the years.
He also loves to teach, and is highly committed to serving a variety of local non-profit organizations. In addition to his role as an adjunct lecturer at California State University, Sacramento, where he teaches an undergraduate course in recreation law each semester, Spring is an assistant boys varsity basketball coach at Folsom High School. He also provides pro bono services to Shalom School, Temple Or Rishon, UC Davis Hillel, the Sacramento Jewish Federation and The ABA Military Pro Bono Project, an organization providing legal support to underserved active duty military personnel.
Spring received his Juris Doctor degree from George Washington University Law School, with honors, and his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University.
